Overview
With the growing use of in-car navigation Hema Maps has produced a collection of raster maps on DVD.
This DVD is based on images of Hema's regional maps and is compatible with most Windows based navigational programs.
If the user has a GPS, a laptop or personal organiser and a matching navigational program, then the Australia 4WD DVD will provide in-car navigation.
Features information, photos and maps from more than 65 Hema regional maps including Cape York, East Gippsland, Fraser Island, Kimberley, Mid West WA, North East NSW, Pilbara & Coral Coast, Red Centre, Simpson Desert, South East NSW, Top End and Gulf, Tropical North Qld , and the Great Desert Tracks.
Also included are Australia 1:1Million map and Australia 1:250k topo map.
The Hema maps are supplied in OZF2 (OziExplorer) and ECW file formats.
Hema maps are in raster format, covering popular destinations and tourist areas around Australia. This mapping is derived from field work, and prepared for either printing or for digital reproduction, and is called raster mapping. (Raster, because it is made up of collections of pixels, or is a bitmap).
Raster mapping has the advantage of reproducing exactly what we see on paper, including shading, colouring, features and contour lines. Raster maps are one scale only, you cannot decrease the scale without losing resolution, because the image becomes "pixelated".
Raster mapping can be loaded onto selected Garmin GPS handhelds using the
Garmin Custom Maps facility. This is very limited however, as it has strict file size and actual image size limitations. You also need to be aware that you can only create a custom map from a map that is in the public domain, that you hold the copyright in, or that you have permission to use from the copyright holder.
You can load points and routes from the maps, in to any Garmin GPS. You can do this manually, or by computer link, using Fugawi or Oziexplorer programs.
