The
Australian Maritime Safety Authority DGPS beacon system, of which there are 16 stations around the coastline, provide mariners and some land-based operations, the facility to more accurately calculate GPS position, down to half a metre. All this is done in the same time as it takes for any standard GPS to figure a position. The areas of operation are shown in the map above.
Older Garmin handheld units, and some
Hemisphere products are able to use this DGPS system. Interestingly, the stations were originally supplied with sophisticated MX Marine equipment to operate the DGPS. MX Marine still supply various GPS, some of which we have
available.
