Garmin GPS Engines for Product Development
For Developers of Integrated GPS.

Many products can make use of GPS data. Time, position, speed and direction data, all generated from the GPS satellite system, can be utilized. GPS data can be used in products for communications, transportation, timing, security, recreational, and survey industries. For DGPS engines, see JRC.

Every Garmin sensor comes complete with NMEA data output, DGPS input capability, non-volatile memory for one-time configuration, a real-time clock, and raw measurement data output for sophisticated applications. One application, using a Garmin engine, and Bluetooth technology, in a portable situation. New GPS 18 series.

*The GARMIN GPS 16 TracPak shown here, is a complete GPS receiver and embedded antenna designed for a broad spectrum of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) system applications. Based on the proven technology found in other GARMIN 12-channel GPS receivers, the GPS 16 will track up to twelve satellites at a time while providing one-second navigation updates and low power consumption. Its far-reaching capability meets the sensitivity requirements of land navigation as well as the dynamics requirements of high-performance aircraft. Download the specification and applications manual as a PDF file.

The GPS 16 TracPak is housed in a black, water-resistant case and designed to withstand rugged operating conditions. Size is a convenient 90mm diameter, by 45mm high, with 3mm metric screw holes for flush mounting. A magnet plate mount can be supplied. While the GPS 16 TracPak is designed as a "plug 'n play" GPS solution, the minimum system must provide a source of power and a clear view of the GPS satellites. The system may communicate with the GPS 16 via two RS-232 compatible bi-directional communication channels. Internal memory backup allows the GPS 16 to retain critical data such as satellite orbital parameters, last position, date, and time.

The GPS 16 TracPak is available in both low voltage (GPS16L - 3 volt) and high voltage (GPS16H - 6 to 40 volt) configuration, with PPS, and NMEA data at 1 second rate. A GPS16A model will output at a 200millisecond rate, but at 1 second independence. All GPS16 are supplied with a 5metre RJ45 plug interface cable. We can arrange a DB9 serial data connector and cigarette lighter adapter to be pre-wired at extra cost.

The Garmin GPS 17HVS is designed primarily for use in marine or industrial applications and can be flush mounted in addition to pole mounted. It delivers exceptional accuracy while standing up to the harshest environments. The 12-channel receiver allows for continuous tracking of all visible satellites. This GPS receiver produces asynchronous serial data at true RS-232 levels in the industry-standard NMEA 0183 data format. This makes it ideal for interfacing to devices (such as laptops and chartplotters) that expect to hear NMEA 0183 data from a serial com port. The GPS 17HVS also is capable of producing a TTL-level Pulse-Per-Second (PPS) signal whose rising edge is aligned to the UTC second boundary within 1 uS for all conditions in which the GPS receiver has produced a valid and accurate position for at least the previous four-second interval.

A second port on the 17HVS is used for incoming RTCM data, to acheive DGPS accuracy of around 2-3 metres. This can create a dependability source for GPS position and timing information, because the differential beacon incorporates integrity monitoring. This unit is recommended for installations where redundancy is required. DGPS can be sourced from a beacon, or from Omnistar. For general information on the DGPS system, please vist this page.

The GPS 15L. You also require a suitable antenna with MCX antenna.

The GPS 15 and GPS 15L sensors are designed for a variety of OEM system applications, including car navigation, wireless communications, marine navigation, mapping, and more. (WAAS capable, for position accuracy of less than 3 meters in N America only). They also offer excellent EMI/RFI performance for easy integration into systems that will be operated near mobile computing devices and wireless communications equipment. This GPS is available in high-voltage (GPS 15 for 8-40 volts) and low-voltage (GPS 15L for 3.3 - 5 volts) configurations. The GPS 15 and GPS 15L weigh approximately 15 grams, measure about the size of a matchbook. Both offer one-pulse-per-second timing and an RS-232 interface. Supplied with wiring connector. You will require an antenna with an MCX connection.
