Garmin GPS Engines for Computers and Mapping
Modular GPS to use with computer mapping.

Many products can make use of GPS data. Time, position, speed and direction data, all generated from the GPS satellite system, can be utilized. GPS data can be used in products for communications, transportation, timing, security, recreational, and survey industries. For more accurate position DGPS engines, see JRC.

The GPS 18 series are GPS sensors (small 6cm diameter) for use in automotive, marine, fleet vehicle, and electronics applications where a small, highly accurate GPS receiver is needed. They have a special feature for working directly with any of the Garmin Mapsource programs, such as Bluechart marine mapping, or detailed street mapping.

This 12-parallel-channel, WAAS-enabled GPS18 receiver is available in either CMOS-level serial or USB 2.0 full-speed versions, and comes with an integrated magnetic base. The puck-like receiver is 60mm in diameter and weighs little, making it an ideal solution in applications where space is at a premium. Download technical documentation as a PDF file. 0.5MB.

The GPS 18 is offered in three different cable configurations:

A-style USB

The USB version produces data only in the GARMIN proprietary format. This means it is perfect for use with Garmin Mapsource computer mapping products, or for programs designed specifically for that format.

Complete with non-volatile memory for storage of configuration information, a real-time clock, and raw measurement output data for sophisticated customer applications.

The USB 2.0 full-speed version of the GPS18 is also compatible with USB 1.1 full-speed hosts.

Model is GPS18USB.

A different version of this unit is supplied with a 5Hz output, meaning that the NMEA data is presented 5 times a second. This may be useful in situations (eg. agriculture) where position and velocity reports must be delivered more frequently, so that the user interface or application is more realistic. Model is GPS18 5Hz.
