EMAP
MAPPING
Garmin eMap is is supplied with Australia, NZ, Pacific Islands, Asia,
China, Japan, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan etc. mapping in base memory
ROM), with major and secondary roads, railways, rivers, creeks, towns,
rural stations and properties(cattle and sheep) and Highway numbers.
Detailed Australian street mapping is also available for the Garmin
eMap, GPSMAP76 and 76S, eTrex Legend, eTrex Vista, GPSMAP176 (4 level
grey) amd GPSMAP176C (colour). This product is called Garmin City Navigator. The eMap and the GPS176 series,
are equipped with a cartridge slot for data cards with the upgraded mapping.
Mapping can be sourced only from Garmin or Garmin dealers in Australia.
With mapping loaded, the "Find" function on the eMap and other
models, will then activate "street number", "addresses" and "intersection" searches.
Current eMap owners will be able to upgrade the existing units, by overwriting
an existing data card, or using a new data card. The size of data card
depends on what area of mapping you require. For example the whole of
Australia is 46.5 mb, whereas the whole of WA/NT will fit in 8 mb.
GPSV, Street Pilot3 (color), and GPSMAP196 owners may be interested
in Garmin Mapsource City Navigator
Australia which is similar map detail, but has additional support
functions for street by street route calculation and voice guidance.
COMMON AND FAQ ABOUT EMAP:
FAQ......What comes with the basic GPS receiver .
A.....In Australia the eMap comes with base memory complete with Australia/NZ/Asia map data to resolution of 200 metres. Shows railways, rivers, lakes, creeks, roads (major and secondary), towns, and larger rural properties by name. The mapping is comprehensive for all of Australia's traditional road systems. Recently built major road systems may not be included. I call it "comfort level mapping" because you can see at a glance where you are, and how far to a town or point. Find function allows search for any town or waypoint. Comes with lanyard. Runs on 2 batteries for 10 hours. Cables, case etc are extra. The eMap is equipped with a cartridge slot, for data cards with upgraded mapping (available now).
FAQ........Does the eMap have normal GPS functions like other models?
A.......Yes, it can store 500 points, and do a 2000 point track log. And the track log can be stored in a separate file, with memory for 10 files. You can backtrack either forward or reverse. It also has a separate trip page showing elapsed and trip times, and average and maximum speeds, trip meter and odometer. The guidance page is on the map, and shows time, direction and distance to destination.
FAQ.......Would an external antenna make much of a difference?
A........Garmin Antenna GA27c to suit, with magnetic(for roof) and suction (for windscreeen) mounts. I would use this only if you had doubts about effective sky view, eg. windscreen is obscured by roof overhang etc, If you intend driving in heavily forested areas, or in urban high building areas, the external antenna will definitely help. Details.
FAQ........What is needed for a PC cable and car (power) adapter, and are there other accessories?
A.......Individual power lead for 12v cigar lighter. 9 pin serial port lead for computer. A combined power/computer lead is available, and costs less than the two cables together. Other accessories- leather case, non slip rubber skin case, swivel tilt concertina bracket for car (windscreen suction or sticky), bean bag mount for dashboard of car, rail or handlebar bracket. Details.
FAQ....... What does Garmin Mapsource software provide?
A......Garmin Mapsource mapping software includes City Navigator Australia, US, and Europe, Roads and Recreation, Points of Interest, and Worldmap. Check Garmin Mapsource products These Windows PC computer programs allow you to upload very detailed mapping for your area of interest. The mapping is accurate to less than a metre, which is actually better than that capable with the GPS. The programs also allow route calculation and planning, and downloads/uploads for Garmin waypoints, routes and tracks. It is a map based for easy recognition of position down to a few metres. It is also a moving map when used on a laptop in a car, so that you can connect a GPS in real time through the serial port. This shows current position on the map, and also records a bread-crumb trail (track). Also gives analysis of all GPS tracks information such as speeds, distances, bearings. Waypoint information can be annotated and edited. Outputs text files for easy conversion to spreadsheet formats etc., in the format ands datum specified by the user. Outputs DXF files for use in CAD systems.
Optional:
GarmapProXL conversion from Mapsource to DXF, Arcview, Mapinfo points, and multiple and single polylines.
