As well as comprehensive aviation information already built in, you could load detailed marine charts, and/or powerful street by street routing software for Australia's urban areas. This makes the Garmin GPSMap196, a truly unique Magic Carpet device, fulfulling the ancient desire for effortless guidance.
This WAAS-capable unit has detailed moving map graphics, HSI steering guidance, a Jeppesen database, and all the other pilot-friendly features you'd expect from GARMIN. You'll be amazed at the exceptional resolution and contrast on this unit's 12-level grayscale display, and its lightning-fast processor makes for extremely fast map redraws and scrolling.
Situational awareness gets a boost from built-in land detail that includes political boundaries, cities, highways, roads, rivers, and lakes in the Australia/Asia area. Steering guidance is clearly presented through a graphic HSI with VNAV, with extended runway centerlines to help orient you to the runway. An automatic logbook also calculates your flight time and automatically records departure and arrival locations. When used with GARMIN logbook software (exclusively made for the GPSMAP 196), this feature makes light work of maintaining your logbook. This flight information is stored in the unit, and can be downloaded to GARMIN logbook software (free from the Garmin website from August 2002).
The GPSMAP196 accepts most of the Garmin MapSource™ products. Mapsource City Navigator Australia with urban street, number, public venues, post offices, banks etc, will supply some of the features found in expensive in-dash car navigation systems, including auto routing. Mapsource BlueChart CD will supply outstanding detail for your favorite marine areas, including bottom contours, wrecks, breaking shoals, shoreline and beacon details. The GPSMAP196 guidance pages are set up automatically to suit the requirements for land, water or aviation use.
