Leica GS50 is a code only, Clear Track receiver and utilizes the
Racal Wide Area differential service available Australia wide.
It is also available with
free to air beacon DGPS. Leica GS50 may also be used in a post processing
mode with suitable reference station data available from multiple
sources. Leica
GS50 can be upgraded to single frequency code and phase system, allowing
DGPS results to 20mm. Further upgrades to dual frequency and
RTK sytems are also
available. Alternative GS20 system available
with ability to display mapping in the field.

This graphical Windows PC interface shows field
data overlayed on data imported from GIS, whether Mapinfo, Arcview or such.
Leica GS50 uses existing mapping and GIS software
systems and databases. There is no need to convert data to unique portable
formats. When a GS50 user is finished editing data in the field, changes
and additions can be uploaded into the master database in the office. GIS
Data Pro supports a standard environment of vector map and raster image display
that includes aerial photos and satellite imagery. Leica GS50 field input
forms for the handheld terminal are created on the PC Windows GISDataPRO.
The database structure of GISDataPro is the ESRI "shp" format.

Some user observations on the GS50
Balance: The
keypad is beauifully weight balanced- you hardly realise it is in
your hands. Steps for both setout and data collection are menu driven,
and intuitive. The system software has been designed to minimize
learning time, and maximize productive time.
Poise: Leica
GS50 makes field data collection fast and easy, by automating the keyboard
entry with predesigned prompts and fields. Attributes to suit the office GIS
are preloaded- the field worker follows the instructions to obtain valid data
and without time wasting. Log points, or polylines, or a mix of both. You won't
miss valuable information, you won't waste time!
Integrity: Leica have thought of the
most efficient ways to undertake this work- from the way data interchanges
with your GIS, to the guidance from the large display screen. You will find
the system improves data accuracy by specifying the information required. At
a later time, existing features are loaded from the office GIS, and the user
can be guided to those points in the field for an update on the information,
or performance or validity check. Or you can post process field work with reference
station data if real time surveying is impractical for whatever reason.
