eTrex 10 Screen

Screen that you can read outdoors

5.6cm outdoor screen that works superbly in the sun.

The eTrex 10 has an improved 128 x 160 pixel monochrome transflective screen, which means it looks just as good in the sun as it does in the shade. It is also backlit for night time use.
The interface is simple, yet powerful. You can store 1,000 locations with the push of a button, and give them a meaningful name.
The eTrex 10 automatically creates a 10,000 point breadcrumb trail as you walk with it too, which means you’ll never get lost returning to your start point, or backtracking.
eTrex 10 Battery

All day battery. All day navigation.

Takes 2 readily available AA batteries. Up to 25 hours.

The eTrex 10 can run for up to 25 hours using Garmin’s innovative battery saving technology, on two AA batteries.
No battery packs or internal proprietary batteries to worry about.
The last thing you want to worry about when hiking is if your batteries are going to last the final leg of your walk back to your car, or carrying around heavy spare batteries.
eTrex 10 Waterproof

Waterproof and rugged

Can survive 1m of H20 for 30 minutes

The newly designed eTrex 10 retains the core rugged construction and IPx7 waterproof rating of the original eTrex H.
Simply wash your eTrex 10 off at the end of the day, and navigate the outdoors without worrying about it getting wet.
The newly designed casing and crack resistant LCD screen are also stronger than ever.
eTrex 10 GLONASS compatible

GLONASS receiver

Twice as many satellites. 20% Faster to lock on

The eTrex 10 is one of the first-ever consumer-grade receivers that can track both GPS and GLONASS satellites simultaneously.
When using GLONASS satellites, the time it takes for the receiver to "lock on" to a position is (on average) approximately 20 percent faster than using traditional GPS. And when using both GPS and GLONASS, the receiver has the ability to lock on to 24 more satellites than using GPS alone.
eTrex 10 Geocaching Ready

Geocache ready

Load the GPX cache file. Head out.

The eTrex 10 is also geocaching friendly, supporting geocaching GPX files for downloading geocaches and details straight to your unit.
It stores and displays cache information such as location, terrain, difficulty, hints and description, so that you don't have to take printouts with you.
Johnny Appleseed GPS can show you how to get your favourite Geocache sites loaded up onto your eTrex 10.

Basic unit, sensitive and accurate, but not very intuitive

The Garmin Etrex 10 is unquestionably a basic GPS with limited functions. Having said that, it does everything that I expected of it. I have owned other Garmin GPS’s and am familiar with navigating on both land and water. I bought the Etrex 10 to assist me in returning to my vehicle after a day’s detecting in the bush where it is easy to get disoriented, particularly on overcast days. The simple 'Man Overboard' function does this very effectively. The first time user will find the handbook lacking in information and the owner may become confused and frustrated, but Googling for advice will usually answer most queries. Garmin could, and should provide more information, especially because it is a basic unit and is more likely to be purchased by first time users that require more guidance. The joystick is a problem to use, particularly when used as an ‘enter’ function as it is erratic, but this might be a fault with my unit only. On hindsight would I buy this unit again? Yes, despite it not being intuitive like other Garmin products, it does what I expected of it. Would I buy this for route planning or navigating on the water? An emphatic NO. There are better and more suitable units available for those applications.

Pros: Compact, light, accurate and sensitive
Cons: Not as intuitive as other Garmin products. Joystick function erratic. Very poor instruction manual.

Good unit that is easy to use,

I have purchased more tha 80 of these units for Use by Papua New Guinean Agricultural Field Officers to plot the location of coffee gardens. With minimal training they can use them very efficiently.

Pros: Small and easy to carry on field patrols.
Cons: None that I can think of for the purpose used.

Great device! Straightforward to use and inexpensive

I only use the most simple elements of GPS units, marking waypoints and saving tracks, and use maps and sense of direction to find my way. Having said that the Etrex10 has been very reliable so far in determining waypoints and recording tracks. I might use the other elements someday.

Pros: straightforward to use
Cons: over endowed with functions I don't find useful

Great accuracy but slow

The eTrex 10 first notable improvement was the added GLONASS feature added to the GPS making it more accurate and able to read under heavy cover. The only downfall was that when entering way points in a moving vehicle the operating system stalls and the result is you don't get as many GPS points you would like on a moving vehicle.

Pros: Greater accuraccy
Cons: Freezes when entering waypoints on the go
