eTrex 20 Screen

New Improved 240 x 320 Display For Improved Readability

5.6cm outdoor screen that works superbly in the sun.

The eTrex 20x has a new and improved 2.2 inch 65K colour TFT display, which looks good, even in direct sunlight. It also has a shaded relief worldwide basemap, and 3.7GB internal memory plus a microSD card slot for adding detailed mapping. Supports BirdsEye Satellite Imagery, Garmin Custom Maps, as well as detailed street, topo or marine mapping.
The interface is simple, yet powerful. You can store 2,000 locations with the push of a button, and give them a meaningful name.
The eTrex 20x automatically creates a 10,000 point breadcrumb trail as you walk with it too, which means you'll never get lost returning to your start point, or backtracking.
Its easy-to-use interface means you'll spend more time enjoying the outdoors and less time searching for information.
eTrex 20 Battery

All day battery. All day navigation.

Takes 2 readily available AA batteries. Up to 25 hours.

The eTrex 20x can run for up to 25 hours using Garmin's innovative battery saving technology, on two AA batteries.
No battery packs or internal proprietary batteries to worry about.
The last thing you want to worry about when hiking is if your batteries are going to last the final leg of your walk back to your car, or carrying around heavy spare batteries.
eTrex 20 Waterproof

Waterproof and rugged

Can survive 1m of H20 for 30 minutes

The newly designed eTrex 20x retains the core rugged construction and IPx7 waterproof rating of the original eTrex series.
Simply wash your eTrex 20x off at the end of the day, and navigate the outdoors without worrying about it getting wet.
The eTrex 20x features the legendary toughness that's built to withstand the elements – be it dust, dirt, humidity or water, none of which are a match for this storied navigator. The newly designed casing and crack resistant LCD screen are also stronger than ever.
eTrex 20 GLONASS compatible

GLONASS receiver

Twice as many satellites. 20% Faster to lock on

The eTrex 20x is one of the first-ever consumer-grade receivers that can track both GPS and GLONASS satellites simultaneously.
When using GLONASS satellites, the time it takes for the receiver to "lock on" to a position is (on average) approximately 20 percent faster than using traditional GPS. And when using both GPS and GLONASS, the receiver has the ability to lock on to 24 more satellites than using GPS alone.
eTrex 20 Geocaching Ready

Geocache ready

Load the GPX cache file. Head out.

The eTrex 20x is also geocaching friendly, supporting geocaching GPX files for downloading geocaches and details straight to your unit.
It stores and displays cache information such as location, terrain, difficulty, hints and description, so that you don't have to take printouts with you.
Johnny Appleseed GPS can show you how to get your favourite Geocache sites loaded up onto your eTrex 20x.

Very good GPS for mountain biking

Did a boat trip and a mountain bike trip through forest. The GPS was able to track within 20m accuracy while on the move in the forest and 10m on the ocean. Will be using it to follow a rail trail I mapped in Google Earth and converted to GPX for the GPS.

Pros: Track plotting is excellent even in forest

Cons: Takes a bit to get used to the tiny joy stick with my big fingers

    Fast and light

The sensitivity of this gps is great, it is very fast to acquire satellites even under tree cover or in gullies - a huge step up from my phone. I use the battery saver mode and have clocked up over 25hrs of use on only 1/4 of the battery charge with lithium batteries! The sd card slot is really useful on this device as it allows me to easily change the custom maps folder in the field by swapping the sd card to the phone. The biggest downside of this unit is that it is a bit slow to render raster maps I've generated from g-raster, perhaps 10 or so seconds - something I can live with though.

Pros: Small, fast to acquire, battery performance

Cons: Raster rendering speed, no standard accesories included

    Efficient service

The eTrex 20x is small and lightweight, making it easy to carry around in the forest. It is easy to use, but the small screen and lack of buttons means it can be a bit frustrating as you need to navigate between menus for simple tasks (like creating a waypoint). GPS accuracy was not as good as we had expected with the GLONASS function.

Pros: Small size, compact. Quick to connect to satellites.

Cons: Navigating between the menus is a bit frustrating, as is the small screen.

Not much improvement on eTrex 20

If i was given the option again i would choose an eTrex 600. This device really is not much improvement on the eTrex 20 and i find the menu frustratingly slow. I also had to pay an extra $180 for the topo maps of Australia adding to the cost and would have been better off getting the more expensive GPS with topo maps included.

    Pros: Accuracy

Cons: Small screen and frustration going from one page to the next

    Best GPS Unit Ive had

It's a better version of the eTrex 20 and works very well, easy to use and navigate, color screen. Nice.

    Pros: Easy to Use

    Cons: No compass calibration

Johnny Appleseed GPS responded to this review on the 7 November 2015
Hi Serge. There's no need to ever calibrate the compass on this model, as the compass heading is derived from GPS position (rather than the magnetic compass on the eTrex 30x). Because of this, the compass works based on movement so if you take a step or two in one direction the compass will start updating.

Great for its designed use - Hiking, trails etc.

This GPS is designed for hiking. It does what it is intended well. It however will possibly disappoint if you want to use it out of the box for a general GPS such as for use as a street - route guide. You will need to download compatible maps that are 'street route able' The base map is very basic and you will need to at least use Topo maps for it to be of decent value. However said, the product does work out of the box, works well and the unit itself I am quite happy with. Just be prepared to shell out a little on some decent maps.

Pros: Compact - intuitive and reliable unit. Works very well.

Cons: Maps - be prepared to buy decent maps for this device.
