Exactly what I wanted.

Exactly what I wanted for accurately measuring max speed for all of my radio control vehicles. Has large easy to read digital display which can be locked into whatever info field you need, max speed, average speed etc. The unit is extremely robust and has handled all the punishment I've put it through. Have also used it for cycling, walking and in my own motor vehicle.

Pros: Easy to navigate menu.

Small, accurate and functional

After buying and carrying a GPS with a rolling map display (expensive) I realised that I still need to carry a map and compass and was mainly using the GPS for a grid reference. The Garmin Fortrex 401 was just what I needed. It is lightweight, and inexpensive and provides quick and accurate grid references and a host of other features, including tracks and waypoints. I also downloaded the Garmin Express software (free) to allow me to update way points and download tracks onto my computer. Best value for money GPS on the market.

Pros: Able to connect with a computer.
Cons: Entering way points via the device is slow.

Great piece of kit !

A great upgrade from my first generation Garmin Etrex. A lot faster connection and still using the same basic menu pages as the Etrex. The wrist mount allows for climbing without something hanging around your neck. Also allows me to download my tracks. Or it will when I upgrade my old MacBook Pro. Great service from Johnny Appleseed.

Pros: Small, lightweight, easy to use, leaves both hands free for poles etc.
Cons: None yet.

Compact and effective

I use this for checking my location. To that end it is effective, convenient and compact so it doees not take up much space or weight.

Pros: Picks up signal well, great size; ease of replacing batteries
Cons: To find GPS co-ord's have to go to waypoint, rather than direct screen

Hi Michael. You can configure one of the display fields on the Foretrex 401 to always show your current co-ordinates, in the format of your choice. Give us a call, and we'll help you set this up.

Excellent compact field navigation GPS

Foretrex is a great little unit - does everything I was requiring of it for navigation. Easy to set up and configure, esspecially if you are already familiar with Garmin menus. Appears to be an accurate and reliable position, with many coordinate formats to choose from, including MGRS which is govt and military standard. Very compact and lightweight at 85 gms with battery. I have not run a battery flat as yet, but I only turn it on to get a position fix then off again, 5-10 mins. Battery seems to last a long time using it this way, which makes it handy for multi-day trips/work. Solidly built and resonably weatherproof, but probably not watertight enough for immersion. A perfect companion to a good topographic map.

Pros: Small, lightweight, accurate positions
Cons: Wrist strap is bulky and difficut to remove if not required.

Excellent bit of kit

The Foretrex 401 is an excellent navigation aid. It's size, battery life, readability and ease of use make it a near-indispensable tool to take out field. Wrist mounting, or mounting it on a weapon stock or steering wheel , makes check navigation a breeze. My only complaint is that the screen scratched easily , as happened the second time I used it while unloading a vehicle. A minor point, as the scratch does not interfere with readability or functionality. I have yet to use the jump master function. I highly recommend this product

Pros: Intuitive use; changeable options on tracking screen (most useful for me was GR, altitude, and average speed
Cons: Screen scratches easily

Great piece of kit, brilliant for hiking (particularly solo)

I bought this for training as well as hiking socially and it's a great piece of gear. Only had it a month or so but used it consistently with no dramas. Takes a while to get used to some of the built in or deep menu stuff but very easy to use and follow/plot routes with. Burns through the batteries but iv been hiking for up to 8hr legs and haven't had it die on me yet. Been through heavy rain, kayaking in the ocean and sweated on it a lot and the waterproof rating is holding up fine. Also brilliant service from you guys, A+ products too so would definitely buy from again and recommend to anyone after a good GPS.

Pros: Simple, tough, heaps of features, cheap battery type
Cons: Battery life could be better but then you wouldn't have the handiness of using AAA's

Very happy with the 401

Found it to be just the replacement for my old Garmin, having a small unit like the 401 attached to my wrist while out hunting is great, both hands free. The only negative is the wrist strap is a tad small another 1cm would be good for those of us who have thick wrists. When the extension is added it become to big for my wrist. I also use when out bike riding to keep track of my pace and distance. I prefer the larger screen to the normal wrist watch units on offer.

Pros: Size and ease of use, ability to pass content between my 62sc and 401
Cons: wrist strap could longer
