GPSMAP 64

2.6" Sunlight-readable 65K Colour Screen

High-sensitivity GPS and GLONASS receiver with quad helix antenna.

The GPSMAP 64 has a 2.6 inch 65K colour TFT display, which looks good, even in direct sunlight. It also has a shaded relief worldwide basemap, and 4GB internal memory and microSD card slot, for adding detailed mapping. Supports BirdsEye Satellite Imagery, Garmin Custom Maps, as well as detailed street, topo or marine mapping.
With its quad helix antenna and high-sensitivity, GPS and GLONASS, receiver, GPSMAP 64 locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its location even in heavy cover and deep canyons. When using GPS and GLONASS together, the receiver has the ability to lock onto 24 more satellites than using GPS alone, ensuring you can "lock on" to a position more quickly.
The GPSMAP 64 also includes Garmin's TracBack Feature, which allows you to retrace your path back to where you started.

Just walk, drive or ride around the perimeter to be measured, press a button, and there you have it. A really productive feature for farmers, botanists, agronomists, graziers, oyster and fish culture, salt-works... etc etc. For farming, agriculture, agronomy, aquaculture and related endeavours, the GPSMAP 64 measures distances and directions between points, and area measurements.
You can also navigate to geo-tagged photos, making it a versatile GPS.

Looks same as 62 series, but significantly better

My old 62s died recently after 5 years heavy use. Could have bought another 62s on ebay etc cheaper than new 64s, but really no contest. Electronic compass is really useful as compass always orients map, even when standing still. Also got excellent price from Johnny Appleseed for package complete with now updated Garmin map, as well as Eneloop batteries 2400Mh seriues, and protective cover for unit.

Pros: Electronic compass, Smart phone connectivity
Cons: Some suggestions that Garmin twin pack battery not as good as Eneloop rechargables.

solid unit, great value for $

Once I got Garmin Basecamp, it opened up the potential for this GPS unit. Saving files in Google Earth and then exporting them into Basecamp is very easy and makes this an ideal unit for the outdoor adventurer/hunter. A tremendous GPS and RAM mounts make it a pleaseure to use on a bike or in the car. Phone support from JA is great too. Sold me what I needed, not what made them the most sales. Am a repeat customer and the prices are sharp.

Pros: features are many, robust unit

Not enough online information

This model has good track and trail finding capabilities but all online videos by Garmin refer to the 64S or 64CS which have a lot of differences. Watching these videos on you-tube is very frustrating when it comes to parts of the menu that are item specific to the other models. I am disappointed in not being able to read "birdseye" from the SD card once downloaded, I had to go onto various forums to find out that it can only be read from the device itself. The manual is not very clear for the novice and the world wide maps are a waste of time as the purchase of "topo" maps is essential in order to see the terrain clearly. Garmin probably make more money out of their registered maps than they do from the sale of the device itself. They seem too intent on bringing out more models than they are on improving their existing models. Bringing out another one and giving it a S or CS or CSX or ST designation does nothing to the poor fool who is stuck with the base model and hardly any instructional support. The manual could do with some intelligent and specific instruction for this model and not include things such as " virb, Bluetooth, elevation plot, and many others that are not on the "64". I should have checked out other brands before buying this gps as I find that all of the extra maps are very expensive and can only be used on the one device. I tried loading a government 'land use' map of property boundaries in my state but the device wouldn't recognise it once it was on the card. Overlays from "Google-Earth" can not be put onto it either as I have tried in vain. Basics are ok but for the extra bits, they are expensive and hard to understand.

Pros: Basically accurate
Cons: Require add-ons to be really usefull

Best in class!

GPSMAP 64 is a fast fix device, and if you have multiple maps, and a satellite subscription (BirdsEye) you get great imagery back up to the 2-dimensional maps we are all used. The handheld has a great screen and feels good in hand. Although the aerial protrudes from the device body I have not found this to be a hindrance, as the device mounts well with the compatible RAM mounts in-car and is the perfect grab-n-go GPS when in & out of the car 4wd-ing, or out hiking, geocaching and trail finding. Recommended to be used with Garmin Birdseye, depending on your activity. Tiles for this are easily downloaded to your device via Basecamp - but don't expect to do large satellite image areas. This is perfect if you know where you are going and can download relevant map images before getting there, and out of data reception. A feature packed device, that is moderately priced. Upgrades available in the same line of GPS offer wireless connectivity for those seeking greater freedom, but as a standalone device this was a great replacement for my previous generation Garmin GPS.

Pros: Fast fix GPS + GLONASS
Cons: Load Geocaches from Garmin site too difficult

excellent versatility in the menu.

So simple to use even my husband that never has used a GPS found the menu so easy to scroll thru. The features are excellent especially the distance measure. I was amazed how quickly the GPS finds satellites in seconds unlike my old Mag....n that took 5 minutes.
