2.6" Sunlight-readable Colour Screen

With high-sensitivity GPS and GLONASS receiver with quad helix antenna.

The GPSMAP 64s has a 2.6 inch 65K colour TFT display, which looks good, even in direct sunlight. It also has a shaded relief worldwide basemap, 4GB internal memory and microSD card slot, for adding detailed mapping. Includes a 1 year subscription to BirdsEye Satellite Imagery. Also supports Garmin Custom Maps, as well as detailed street, topo or marine mapping.
With its quad helix antenna and high-sensitivity, GPS and GLONASS, receiver, GPSMAP 64s locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its location even in heavy cover and deep canyons. When using GPS and GLONASS together, the receiver has the ability to lock onto 24 more satellites than using GPS alone, ensuring you can "lock on" to a position more quickly.
The GPSMAP 64s also includes Garmin's TracBack Feature, which allows you to retrace your path back to where you started.

With Smart Notification you can wirelessly receive email, texts and alerts from your compatible iPhone® 4s or later. Stay connected without having to dig into your backpack for your smartphone.
The GPSMAP 64s has a 16 battery life, and works with 2 AA batteries, or the optional NiMH battery pack, which as an added bonus, can be charged while inside the device.

3-axis Compass with Barometric Altimeter

Get your bearings.

GPSMAP 64s has a built-in 3-axis tilt-compensated electronic compass, which shows your heading even when you're standing still, without holding it level.
Its barometric altimeter tracks changes in pressure to pinpoint your precise altitude, and you can even use it to plot barometric pressure over time, which can help you keep an eye on changing weather conditions.
The GPSMAP 64s is waterproof to IPX7 standards, so you can use it in any weather. You can even use it around water without worrying about damage.
With the GPSMAP 64s, you can measure an area for farming and other rural and marine applications. Area measurement is simple and fast. Just walk, drive or ride around the perimeter to be measured, press a button, and there you have it. A really productive feature for farmers, botanists, agronomists, graziers, oyster and fish culture, salt-works... etc etc. For farming, agriculture, agronomy, aquaculture and related endeavours, the GPSMAP 64 measures distances and directions between points, and area measurements.
You can also navigate to geo-tagged photos, making it a versatile GPS.

Excellent GPS for serious navigation

I was a dedicated Etrex user for 15 years but used a GPS map 64 while volunteering with Parks Victoria assisting with deer management and research. I was really impressed with the electronic compass and the mapping, that allows the user to load way points from a laptop or tablet, or to load way points manually tthen to travel to the way points as required. The electronic compass will keep you on your bearing and you don't have to be moving to make the compass work, so you save a lot of time and walking. The map screen let's you plan your route and box around rough country, and I find the proximity alarms and sight and go features very useful. I chose this model for it's large memory space, that allows you to store literally thousands of topography, satellite and special type maps. The unit also comes with a 12 month free subscription to a very useful satellite mapping program. I really like using the GPS 64 and recommend it to demanding users such as outdoor workers, Fire authority employees, researchers, backpack hunters and fisher people who are walking in wilderness and other remote areas,

Pros: Simple to use, huge memory, electronic compass
Cons: Nothing I could find

GPSMAP 64S - Great GPS

This is the second Garmin GPSMAP 64S we have purchased - both members in our Geocaching team now have one. Over about twelve months we got to appreciate the accuracy and functions of the unit. So, when a long serving Garmin Etrex H died, there was no question but to replace it with a GPSMAP 64S.

Pros: Accuracy, large memory
Cons: It takes some time with extensive experimentation to learn the functions and how to best access them.

Robust and reliable

We've previously owned a pair of Garmin GPS 60 units, for over a decade, one of which is still going strong. The GPS 64s feels like a deluxe version of that unit, more accurate, much faster fixes, and a far nicer display. The UI has never been particularly intuitive, but it's familiar to us from previous units. It's a step back from using GPS mapping apps on my Android smartphone in terms of ease of use, but it's undoubtedly a much better field tool. It's already survived a drop of 5 feet onto hard rock with barely a scratch, and it'll replace our GPS 60 as standard field kit. The inbuilt factory map is pretty much worthless though if you're doing any remote work, but once you build up your own tracks and waypoints that becomes less of an issue. We also bought the Garmin TOPO maps which this unit handles very well.

Pros: Robust, fast satellite acquisition, decent battery life (days, not hours), clear display especially with optional maps
Cons: Somewhat archaic UI, poor inbuilt maps

fantastic hand held GPS

first time out worked a treat, very easy to use and intuitive interface. need more time to get the full use of the unit, but that will involve a lot more time in the bush hunting so it will be time well spent
