With its quad helix antenna and high-sensitivity, GPS and GLONASS, receiver, GPSMAP 64st locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its location even in heavy cover and deep canyons. When using GPS and GLONASS together, the receiver has the ability to lock onto 24 more satellites than using GPS alone, ensuring you can "lock on" to a position more quickly.

GPSMAP 64

3-axis Compass with Barometric Altimeter

Get your bearings.

GPSMAP 64st has a built-in 3-axis tilt-compensated electronic compass, which shows your heading even when you're standing still, without holding it level.
Its barometric altimeter tracks changes in pressure to pinpoint your precise altitude, and you can even use it to plot barometric pressure over time, which can help you keep an eye on changing weather conditions.
The GPSMAP 64s is waterproof to IPX7 standards, so you can use it in any weather. You can even use it around water without worrying about damage.
With the GPSMAP 64st, you can measure an area for farming and other rural and marine applications. Area measurement is simple and fast. Just walk, drive or ride around the perimeter to be measured, press a button, and there you have it. A really productive feature for farmers, botanists, agronomists, graziers, oyster and fish culture, salt-works... etc etc. For farming, agriculture, agronomy, aquaculture and related endeavours, the GPSMAP 64 measures distances and directions between points, and area measurements.
You can also navigate to geo-tagged photos, making it a versatile GPS.

Great device - perfect for the task

Using a number of different units over the years. I am impressed with the GPSMAP 60 series. Using for Exploration mineral program it is a compact, durable unit that is easy to operate and easy use menus. All in all great units for field work.

Pros: Compactibility and Durability
Cons: Display Glare minimised but still issue in full sunlight

Worthy successor to the GPSMap 60

I have been using garmins for geological field work over the last 15-20 years initially GPS12 through GPSMap60csx, which recently succumbed after 9 years. I started using the GPSmap64st in earnest a couple of weeks ago and it took me a while to get around some of the different options eg I needed to use the manual to find out how to stop navigation. Now I am a reasonably seasoned user I can see that the menu system has been streamlined even if not totally intuitive...for me at least. Very easy to read screen in bright conditions and the range of information that can be displayed is impressive. I find that linking the unit with my GIS software via Garmin Base Camp is another highlight, eg upload and download of edited waypoints is straighforward. In short I loved using the csx but am getting used to the new one.

Pros: Great daylight legible screen
Cons: Menu quite disjointed and cumbersome, but its all there!

Still my favourire GPS

Thought I would upgrade from my present GPSmap 60Csx which is now about 6 years old and still going well. Having seen the Aus and NZ Topographical maps on the 64st I wanted one. Pleased with my choice so far.

Pros: Toppo Maps
Cons: Battery life is a bit limited.

This Garmin gps is a very sturdy unit

I find the auto switching to track up from North up once you start zooming down to close map a very handy option. Overall it appears to be a very sturdy unit and the portability is excellent . Extremely quick to log onto sats once turned on. The mounting hardware available makes this a great unit for any application. Great to not have a touch screen for a change. You can keep better control of your way around the screen with the buttons.

Pros: The fast log on and the buttons along with the available mounting systems. Also the recharble battery on the go.
Cons: The screen size is very small but that makes it a portable I guess.

Accurate GPS with good features but clumsy to use

The functions on the GPS are excellent. I had no problems with GPS signals even under very dense sub-tropical rain-forest foliage. The birds-eye maps (satellite imagery downloaded separately) are very useful. The only downside is the clumsy navigation through the menus and typing in way points etc. The screen is also just a little small for ageing eyes.

Pros: Excellent GPS signal even under dense cover
Cons: Clumsy typing and navigation
