Invaluable on the dirt bike trail

This is my second Montana, the 1st finally giving up after more than 6 years and 10,000km mounted above the handlebars of an endure dirt bike used only off-road, probably endured a few crashes too. After previously trying many GPS units, the Montana with Topo maps was the first to truly deliver. A consistent externally power delivery had always been a problem but the rugged mount of the Montana 680T delivers consistent power supply despite the punishment dealt by off-road riding. Being able to lock the view to landscape plus the big touch screen makes detours easy and the positioning making it less vulnerable to damage from scrub and in the event of a crash. Using the Mac based (or PC) software makes easy work of adjusting existing mapped routes and tracks or creating new ones. I've spent a lot of money trying different options each with various levels of success. My search has ended. If this sounds too much like marketing, it's probably because I am in marketing and it is just the way I write but I have no affiliation with JAS or Garmin. I just love the way this product does its job.

Pros: Secure mount providing reliable power supply. Easy to read and use
Cons: None.

very good GPS

I used it for road navigation so far only. In comparison with Nuvi 5OO I am missing detailed overview of planned track and a detour option - it would navigate using closed road and there is no option to avoid it. I also expect to use it as a char tplotter for boating and as a backup for flying, spec look very good for it.

Pros: too many to mention
Cons: heavy, requires it's own holder for verbal navigation

Problems problems problems....

Foolishly bought this unit as a Montana 650 replacement after the internal aerial connection broke (common fault). However, either the Unit (or Topo maps) has a big navigation problem in SE Qld, particulary east of Noosa. Will not navigate correctly. JA says it's a known issue - but Garmin feigns ignorance and wants me to " open a case" and do their troubleshooting / R&D work for them. Sorry, far too busy. Avoid this unit if SE Qld navigation is required.

Pros: None
Cons: Super heavy, old tech, expensive and poor support, oh and nav problems.

Using it in the WA desert now. Liking it a lot.

I have spent time with the 680t in the field and have been happy with all I have asked from it. It's fast, and easy to see in glare, function selections smooth and I love the big screen. All round package for me with A/NZ Topos and Birdseye are a competitive deal. Used wifi Bluetooth yesterday - how easy. Too good.
