Small Package , Huge on features

Feature Packed and fully optioned. Recently using this unit in the Vic high country I cannot recommend it enough. Being able to use it as a 5W 80ch handheld radio, and GPS was very handy. Being able to see others on the map and the ability to make your way to them was fantastic taking all of the guess work out of locating the rest of the party, amazingly simple to use with endless options to customize the setup to your requirements. The accuracy and speed of the GPS positioning was a huge improvement on my old gps that required you to walk 10 paces to get your bearings. The only thing I did not like was the way the unit hung from the supplied Carabiner on your belt, it tended to catch on everything and swung around a lot. After a week in the bush it was reassuring to have a reliable piece of kit like this on my side.

Pros: GPS and Radio Combo
Cons: Belt Clip puts unit in awkward position when bushwalking

Potential to be a great product, but undercooked at this stage.

It has the potential to be a really great product but it is very underdeveloped and lacks a lot of features. It also has a LOT of static and noise on the UHF radio if you have the "send position" feature turned on. I contacted Garmin, but their response was "this is by design" !!!! Such a shame because the UHF is crystal clear if you have this feature turned off. The other thing I don't like is you can't scroll to a certain section of the map, then go back to the menu without losing the location of the map, really frustrating!

Pros: Seems like a solid built unit.
Cons: Really bad static on the 2 way radio if "send position" is turned on. Each time you go back to the menu, it resets the position of the map.

from my son on Rino 650

I haven't given it to my son yet as it is for his birthday next month but I bought it for him as two of his mates had them and he was so impressed with it when they went away last time that he wanted one as well.

Solid unit

I have 18 Rino650s for my field team. On the whole, they're a solid dependable unit. We work in some very rugged areas and these units get an absolute beating. The combination of UHF radio and GPS in the single product is certainly more convienient in the field. Battery life is good and the optional AA battery pack is a great backup when you're in the scrub. We've found that there are issues when using the radios to communicate with other types of UHF units. Often we can hear people transmitting to us, but they are unable to recieve our transmissions. The ability to share locations on the map screen is fantastic when working transects in heavy scrub, but can eventually make the map confusing if you're spending a lot of time in an area. My biggest beef with these units is that you are unable to see waypoint details easily. There are many times when I need to see the lat/long of a given waypoint. The only way I have found to do this, is to open the wapoint for editing which brings in the possibility of altering the location of a waypoint accidentally. After a few years service, we've had 5 units malfunction. Although out of warranty, Garmin were very good to deal with and supplied replacement units at a very reasonable cost.
