Garmin Overlander

Roam the Unknown with the Rugged, All-terrain Navigator Built for On- and Off-road Navigation

Built for every part of the journey, Overlander is a rugged, all-terrain navigator that can easily switch from turn-by-turn directions (HERE Maps) for on-road navigation to topography maps (HEMA 1:150k Raster) for off-grid guidance in Australia and New Zealand.

An essential device to include with your overlanding gear, the Overlander features integrated pitch and roll angles as well as a compass, altimeter and barometer to help you and your vehicle navigate difficult terrain. A built-in rechargeable battery means you can even take it beyond your vehicle.

Create a Garmin Explore™ account to plan and map out your next adventure. You can easily record and create routes by tapping the screen on your Overlander navigator. Use your account to wirelessly sync — via Wi-Fi® connectivity1 — your tracks, routes and waypoints across all your devices.

On/Off Road

7” colour touchscreen features turn-by-turn directions for on-road navigation and Hema raster (1:150k) topography maps for off-road guidance covering Australia and New Zealand.

Great idea but lacks real like R&D

The device and how it works is great and i believe Garmin is on to something with it. However, it is very lacking with the real world R&D. Firstly the unit is big and only comes with a window suction mount and a ball for RAM mount. Window mount is useless as the unit is really too big to be placing on the window, also when you do it bounces around off road. This leaves you with no choice but to source a RAM mount system that will work. However, dont think you can then run a RAM mount and put the unit in portrait mode as it only works in the Hema maps not the Garmin maps, this being the case you are forced to use the unit in landscape mode, to which is very limiting when mounting due to the size. Tan surround looks terrible and stands out like mud on a white sheet. Hey robber come see my Garmin it is waving to you in the window. I don’t understand Garmin’s thinking. No hard wire kit? Simply Garmin have hit a gold with the idea but seem to have put on the market before real world testing. Sorry Garmin wish I didn’t purchase.

Pros: Switching between Garmin nav and Hema maps is awesome
Cons: Too big, tan surround is terrible, mounting option doesn’t work and no direct wring kit available.

Hi Scott, take a look at this compatible cable as a hard-wired option https://www.ja-gps.com.au/Garmin/nuvi-500-serial-power-cable/

Very expensive solution with significant limitations

Off the bat it has to be pointed out that this IS a very expensive unit for what really is just an Android tablet with a bright screen and Garmin's navigation apps sitting on top. This is really apparent when navigating through the menus and switching between on-road and off-road maps - there are inconsistencies between in the GUI, and each app has its own map update settings, as an example. Localisation is baffling too, where you must set metric measurements multiple times, and yet barometric pressure can't be set in metric. For the price, I would expect it to be more polished and better integrated. It's also somewhat disappointing that the Hema off-road maps are not as detailed as if you bought Hema topo maps from say Memory-Map, and with no option to download third party maps, I'll continue to use an iPad for detailed maps. Another disappointment is features like Garmin SmartPhone Link don't work with this device. Why is this important? The bundled Traffic Receiver (which the Johnny Appleseed site says isn't included), is next to useless and the over the air updates it provides are hit and miss at very best. With the Garmin SmartPhone Link app linked to my Zumo 396 provides much better traffic updates and better aids at routing around traffic jams exceeding 10km long, where the bundled Traffic Receiver didn't even show the jam at all. There are positives, the screen is very bright, the device is very fast compared to my Zumo 396, and for on-road mapping, has a very familiar interface. Having reversing camera functionality built in is also a major positive, but as I bought my device on sale, I don't know that I could justify paying $999 for a device that doesn't allow installing 3rd party maps.

    Pros: Speed and screen brightness
Cons: Price and Android integration, low resolution of Hema maps
