Garmin Overlander

Roam the Unknown with the Rugged, All-terrain Navigator Built for On- and Off-road Navigation

Built for every part of the journey, Overlander is a rugged, all-terrain navigator that can easily switch from turn-by-turn directions (HERE Maps) for on-road navigation to topography maps (HEMA 1:150k Raster) for off-grid guidance in Australia and New Zealand.

An essential device to include with your overlanding gear, the Overlander features integrated pitch and roll angles as well as a compass, altimeter and barometer to help you and your vehicle navigate difficult terrain. A built-in rechargeable battery means you can even take it beyond your vehicle.

Create a Garmin Explore™ account to plan and map out your next adventure. You can easily record and create routes by tapping the screen on your Overlander navigator. Use your account to wirelessly sync — via Wi-Fi® connectivity1 — your tracks, routes and waypoints across all your devices.

On/Off Road

7” colour touchscreen features turn-by-turn directions for on-road navigation and Hema raster (1:150k) topography maps for off-road guidance covering Australia and New Zealand.

Great device. Need time to familiarize yourself with it.

This device needs better updates road maps. In port broughton SA. It told us we couldn't turn left at T intersection but you could. Also when a beware of kangaroo sign comes up it shows a deer picture. For a expansive device it needs a lot better updates.

Pros: Large easy to see screen
Cons: Too americanized. Instead of a kangaroo sign it shows a deer.

Excellent gear if you want to replace your mobile/phone GPS.

This is a really good device for a traveller like me as it gives me the ability to take the roads less traveled. But in order to do that one must have the patience to plan the route well in advance and learn to use Garmin explore. Coming off of using Google maps it may be a bit cumbersome to get your head around some of the navigation features but all in all very intuitive. I feel the maps have some rendering issues. There is a bit of lag while trying to zoom into an area. Having had locus maps for most part (the maps load really, really fast in comparison) I feel Garmin can do a bit more to optimise the speed of rendering and make it faster, given the dedicated flagship hardware I would expect a faster load time. Another thing I noticed is this device still runs on Android 6.0.1 which is a huge negative given the flagship specs (this could explain the rendering being slow) Zooming in and out to view an alternative route can be quite daunting but not a deal breaker, you eventually learn it. Don't really need network, just being under the sky is all you need to do to get connected and navigate where you want. Happy with the purchase. Postage however took a while as it was posted using standard parcel Post with signature (I was expecting express), I may have chosen this at checkout but given the price I had to wait quite a while to have the device in my hands. The reason I give it 4 stars is the device needs improvement in terms of OS and rendering speed only, everything else is above and beyond. JA service and support is impeccable, thank you!

Pros: Relies only on GPS and not on any other network, speed limits are spot on, comes with a mount.
Cons: Expensive, zooming in and out to view alternate border areas/roads can be quite challenging, android 6.0 - need a serious update here!

    Nice screen, easy to use!

Purchased to replace my iPhone using WikiCamps and google maps for remote travel... add in a reverse camera and I thought it would be good... it is... just wish I could get WikiCamps to run on the device(it installs but crashes on start), and VictronConnect(to monitor my vans electrics, which installs but doesn’t display a pin prompt)... Then when the reverse camera is powered on, it takes precedence for the wifi and you can’t over ride it which is a bummer... all in all still good... just not great.

Pros: Topo and routable maps! Yay!
Cons: Locked down tightly, reverse camera seems to override everything
